"WilliamGilbertwasfascinatedbymagnets,”asDr.DavidP.SternofNASAnotes.Giventwomagnets,Gilbertknewthatmagneticpolescanattractorrepel,dependingonpolarity.Inaddition,however,ordinaryironisalwaysattractedtoamagnet.Gilbertguessed,correctly,thatnearapermanentmagnetironbecameatemporarymagnet,ofapolaritysuitableforattraction.Thatis,theendofanironbarstucktoanSpoleofamagnet(south-seekingpole)temporarilybecomesanN-pole.Becausemagneticpolesalwayscomeinmatchedpairs,theotherendofthebartemporarilybecomesanS-pole,andcaninitsturnattractmoreiron.Gilbertconfirmedhisguessoftemporary("induced")magnetismbyanoriginalexperiment.Usingstrings,hehungtwoparallelironbarsabovethepoleofaterrella,amodelearthhedesignedforthisexperiment,andnotedthattheyrepelledeachother.Undertheinfluenceoftheterrella,eachbecameatemporarymagnetwiththesamepolarities,andthetemporarypolesofeachbarrepelledthoseoftheotherone.
